Cockroach Control in Atlanta: Palmetto Bugs and German Roaches

In Atlanta the word roach covers two separate problems. One lives in your trees and gutters and visits. The other lives in your kitchen and breeds there. Which one you have decides almost everything about the fix.

Big and dark: the outdoor roaches

Smokybrown cockroaches are a little over an inch long, uniformly dark mahogany and shiny. American cockroaches are larger, reddish-brown with a pale band behind the head. Both are the insects people here call palmetto bugs or water bugs. UGA's entomologists describe smokybrowns as most common in older neighbourhoods with mature hardwood trees, where they live in tree holes, leaf litter, mulch and gutters, and as rare in new construction. Intown Atlanta, with its oaks and its century-old houses, is close to ideal for them.

They come inside through gaps under doors, unscreened crawlspace vents, dryer vents, plumbing penetrations and floor drains, especially after heavy rain or a sudden cold night. Seeing one or two in a season is normal for the area. Seeing them every week means there is an open route in, or they are living in the crawlspace or attic.

Small and tan: the German cockroach

German cockroaches are about half an inch long, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live indoors, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms, close to warmth, water and food, and they reproduce fast enough that a few become hundreds in a couple of months. They arrive in grocery and delivery boxes, used appliances and furniture, and in apartments, duplexes and attached townhomes they move through shared walls and plumbing. If you see small roaches in daylight, the population is already large.

Why the plans are different

For outdoor roaches

The work is on the outside of the house: treating the foundation line, mulch beds and crawlspace, clearing and treating gutters, and sealing the ways in. Door sweeps, screened vents and caulked pipe gaps do as much as any product. Pulling mulch and pine straw back a foot from the foundation helps, and so does fixing a crawlspace that stays wet.

For German cockroaches

Sprays mostly scatter them. What works is gel bait placed in the cracks where they hide, an insect growth regulator that stops them breeding, and dust in wall voids, repeated over several visits two or three weeks apart until the population collapses. Your part matters: food sealed, crumbs and grease cleaned under the stove and fridge, no water left in the sink overnight, and no cardboard stored in the kitchen. In multifamily housing, treating one unit without the neighbours often means they come back.

Asian cockroaches, the ones that fly at lights

The Asian cockroach reached Florida in the early 1980s and has since become established in parts of Georgia. It looks almost identical to the German cockroach, but UGA's fact sheet describes it as an outdoor insect of shaded leaf litter, mulch and tall grass that flies readily and is drawn to light, and rarely found indoors unless a light pulls it in. If small roaches are flying at your porch light or a lit window in the evening, this is a likely suspect, and it is an outdoor problem rather than a sign of an indoor infestation. Yellow bulbs and fewer outdoor lights at dusk help. Mention it when you call.

Common questions

Is a palmetto bug a cockroach?

Yes. In Atlanta it usually means a smokybrown or American cockroach. The name is regional and covers several large outdoor species.

I see one big roach a month. Do I need treatment?

Not necessarily. Occasional outdoor roaches wandering in are normal for this area. Sealing gaps and a perimeter treatment reduce them. Treatment is worth it when they become regular or you see them in daylight.

How many visits does a German cockroach problem take?

Usually several, a couple of weeks apart, until no live roaches are found. A single visit rarely finishes it, and a quote that promises that is worth questioning.

Will bug bombs work?

Not on German cockroaches. Foggers do not reach the cracks where they hide and can push them deeper into walls and into neighbouring units.

I rent. Who pays for roach treatment?

That depends on your lease. Tell your landlord in writing. In apartments and attached housing a building-wide plan works far better than one unit.

Do roaches mean the house is dirty?

Outdoor roaches have nothing to do with cleanliness. German cockroaches need food and water indoors, so housekeeping matters for them, but they arrive in clean houses too, carried in on boxes and appliances.

Who would actually come out?

A technician from an independent pest control company licensed in Georgia. This site is an advertising and referral service run by Pinecrest Advisory Services, LLC, and it never sets foot in your kitchen.
